EN 287-1 Welding Qualifications
Our welding qualifications cover a wide range of materials and methods according to EN 287-1 standards:
Material groups explained
Group 1.3, 9.1, 11
- 1.3: Unalloyed (carbon) steels and fine-grain steels
General structural steels, weldable and widely used in construction and industry. - 9.1: Nickel and nickel alloys
High corrosion and heat resistance, often used in chemical and marine industries. - 11: Aluminium and aluminium alloys
Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, used in transport, aerospace, and marine applications.
Group 8, 9.2, 9.3, 10
- 8: Austenitic stainless steels
High corrosion resistance, commonly used in food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. - 9.2: Austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steels
High strength and corrosion resistance, often in offshore and pressure applications. - 9.3: Precipitation-hardening stainless steels
High strength after heat treatment, used in aerospace and high-performance tools. - 10: Copper and copper alloys
Excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, used in electrical and plumbing applications.
Group 51–54, 61–62
- 51–54: Titanium and titanium alloys
Lightweight, strong, and highly corrosion-resistant, widely used in aerospace and chemical processing. - 61–62: Zirconium and zirconium alloys
Extremely corrosion-resistant, used in nuclear and chemical industries.
Welding types
111 – Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMA / SMAW)
Also called stick welding, this process uses a
consumable electrode coated in flux to lay the weld.
- Common for: Structural steel, maintenance, and outdoor work.
- Shielding: Provided by the flux coating.
135 – MAG Welding with Solid Wire
Metal Active Gas welding (MAG) using a solid wire electrode.
Often used for carbon and low-alloy steels.
- Common for: Production welding and fabrication.
- Shielding gas: Typically CO₂ or a mix with Argon.
136 – MAG Welding with Flux-Cored Wire
Similar to 135 but uses a tubular wire filled with flux instead of a solid wire.
- Advantage: Higher deposition rate and better weld penetration.
- Shielding: External gas and internal flux.
138 – MAG Welding with Metal-Cored Wire
A variant of MAG using metal-cored wire,
combining benefits of solid and flux-cored wires.
- Efficient for: High-speed applications with excellent appearance.
- Shielding: External gas (typically Ar/CO₂ mix).
141 – Tungsten Inert Gas Welding (TIG / GTAW)
Uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode and an inert gas shield (usually Argon).
- Known for: High-quality, precise welds.
- Ideal for: Thin materials, stainless steel, titanium, aluminium.
- Slower and requires more skill.
142 – Mechanized TIG Welding
Same as 141 but automated or semi-automated.
- Used in: Pipelines, precision components.
- Offers consistency over long welds.
143 – Plasma Arc Welding (PAW)
An advanced form of TIG where the arc is constricted
through a fine nozzle, creating a high-energy plasma jet.
- Suitable for: High-precision work, especially thin materials.
- Requires more complex equipment.
145 – Laser Beam Welding (LBW)
A high-energy laser beam is used to melt and join materials.
- Ultra-precise, very fast, with minimal heat distortion.
- Used in: Aerospace, automotive, microelectronics.
