How does one determine the appropriate filter grade for a hydraulic system?
Wear and tear on system components are caused by both internal and external contaminants. A hydraulic filter helps to remove particulates, continuously cleaning the oil. The choice of filter grade depends on the following factors:
- Components’ purity requirements and sensitivity
- Flow and viscosity
- Environmental pollution
- Operation cycle of the equipment
- Maintenance and availability of components and spare parts
In general, due to the high pressures and small clearances in hydraulic systems, it is essential to maintain clean oil.
What certifications and design requirements for filters do you use?
EN13445, Norsok M630/650, PED, etc.
What is Offline Filtering (Bypass Filtration) and what are the benefits?
Also known as “kidney filtration“.
Offline filtration systems are complete units with their own motor, pump, and filter.
This design prevents pressure fluctuations in the main system from interfering with filtration efficiency.
Particles remain in the filter, ensuring they do not return to the system.
These systems are available as one or two-step filtration solutions.
The first filter removes large particles and/or free water, while the second filter removes finer particles before the liquid reenters the system. Offline filtration systems are highly adaptable and can be used with a variety of filter elements.
Benefits:
Offline filtration units capture unwanted contaminants in processes
before they return to the main system, ensuring clean fluid circulation.
This additional filtration system prevents particulate and water from
circulating through the system’s engine, gear, or oil reserves.
As a result, the fluid remains clean, reducing premature wear on the machines and optimizing equipment performance and service life.
Additionally, offline filtration can be used to filter new oil into a tank or system.
What is the definition of a beta value?
Filters serve various purposes, requiring different filtration efficiencies for removing specific particles.
The “Beta Ratio,” denoted by the symbol β, is used to define filtration efficiency.
The beta ratio indicates how effective a filter is.
For example, at 10 microns, a Beta 20 filter allows 1 in 20 particles that are 10 microns to pass through.
A Beta 1000 filter allows 1 in 1000 particles to pass through.
Beta values can be listed as β(x): 2, 10, 20, 75, 100, 200, 1000, and 2000.
What is the definition of a micron?
A micron is a unit of measure used to indicate the size of a particulate. It is also known as a micrometer. One micron is equal to one millionth of a meter or one thousandth of a millimeter. The symbol for micron is μm.
What types of filters can you produce?

How large parts can you mill?
We can mill parts up to 10 tons.
The maximum turning length is 3000mm.
How large plates and what thickness can be cut with a laser machine?
We can cut plates measuring 2 x 4 meters with a thickness of 12mm.

What is the difference between cast and forged valves?
Casting involves melting metals into a liquid state
and pouring them into molds to create valve shapes.
Advantages of Cast Valves:
- Cost-effective production
- Less time-consuming to manufacture
- Suitable for lower pressure and temperature environments
Forging shapes metals while they are solid,
usually through compressive forces.
Advantages of Forged Valves:
- High strength and reliability
- Superior performance in high-temperature and high-pressure conditions
- Ideal for critical applications like oil and gas
What is a limit switch?
A limit switch, often called an end switch, is triggered by cams connected
to the actuator shaft. When activated, it sends electrical signals to indicate
the valve’s position, typically confirming whether the valve is fully opened or
closed when operated remotely.
What is an IP rating?
IP – Ingress Protection
Ratings indicate the effectiveness of electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign objects and moisture.
For example:
IP67 means the enclosure is dust-tight and protected against immersion in water up to 1 meter in depth.
Which type of valves does Mento offer?
We offer all types of valves within following categories:
- Ball valves
- Gate, globe and check valves
- Butterfly valves
- Choke valves

What if I don’t know which valve I currently have?
Sometimes, a picture can convey more than words alone.
The best course of action is to take a photo and email it to us, along with
any markings or nameplates, so we can accurately identify it for you.
Additionally, we can discuss its intended application to
ensure it is the optimal valve for your needs.
What is valve cavitation?
Cavitation is a phenomenon that occurs when a liquid flows through a restriction, such as a control valve.
The liquid’s velocity increases in the restricted area, causing pressure to drop and vapor bubbles to form.
When these bubbles collapse, they can cause:
- Noise and vibration
- Erosion of the valve
- Potential mechanical failure
What is valve flow coefficient (Cv)?
The Valve Flow Coefficient (Cv) measures a
valve’s capacity to allow fluid to pass through it.
It is defined as:
The volume of water at 60°F (in US gallons) that flows
through a valve per minute with a 1 psi pressure drop across the valve.
In simpler terms:
The larger the valve’s opening, the higher the Cv value.
Valve maintenance and repair services
Do you offer maintenance and repair services for valves?
Yes, we have a workshop with skilled technicians and equipment to perform all types of maintenance and repair jobs on various types of valves. With over 30 years of experience in the field, skilled engineers, a workshop equipped with mechanics, welders, CNC machines, water and laser cutting machines, a paint shop, and testing facilities, Mento offers comprehensive valve management.
Do you offer on-site surveys?
Yes, we can attend onshore/offshore sites to conduct a comprehensive survey of your valves, manifolds, or other related equipment.
Why is my valve leaking?
Leaks can be caused by a number of factors, including:
- Damaged seals
- Dirty or damaged seats
- General valve damage
- The valve not closing completely (adjust travel stop on actuators, etc.)
Just because your valve is leaking, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you need a new valve or major repairs.
Mento will recommend implementing a maintenance system for all critical valves in your system, and we can
assist you with these maintenance tasks.
Opting for valve maintenance instead of purchasing new valves is both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable.
Welding procedures and Quality Assurance
What is Norsok M-650?
Norsok M-650 establishes quality verification for critical materials.
Foundries must be qualified to M-650 standards to supply high alloy steel to the Norwegian industry.
This standard typically covers high alloy austenitic, duplex, and super duplex stainless steel
used in bars, pipes, fittings, flanges, castings, and other components.
What is the Definition of Differential Pressure?
Differential pressure refers to the difference in pressure between the upstream and downstream flow.
This pressure difference increases as particles clog the filter.
When the filter becomes clogged, the upstream pressure increases, and the downstream pressure decreases.
This results in an increased differential pressure, also known as Delta-P.
Differential pressure (DP) can also be influenced by the flow rate and viscosity of the fluid.

and specifications provided by Mento and Mento Mechanical Solutions.

entering the tank when it is “breathing” due to fluid level changes.
Additionally, a breather filter protects the tank from vacuum and potential implosion.
